Walking, Passive vs. Active
When viewing your activities on FitRankings, you may notice that we distinguish between two types of walking: active and passive. Active walking is denoted, simply, as Walking, whereas passive walking is denoted, Walking (Passive). FitRankings does this to provide the most accurate totals in comparison to your connected app or device. Furthermore, this allows challenges to be better tailored to their audience.
The Walking (Passive) activity represents the steps you complete as you go about your daily routine. An example of this is when you walk from your office to the parking garage. Your device adds this type of passive movement to your daily totals but it won't show up as a discrete workout. FitRankings, on the other hand, will show this as a discrete activity in your feed - Walking (Passive). This is so you can be sure that ALL of your steps and distance are correctly synced between your accounts and included in your challenge stats. Notice, however, that duration and MET minutes are not tracked for these Walking (Passive) activities. This is because duration cannot be reliably measured and would lead to unrealistic measurements in your stats and MET minutes. At the end of the day, FitRankings goal is to provide you the most accurate data and visibility of your workouts as possible. This is one of the many ways in which we aim to do so. Please reach out to support@fitrankings.com if you have any questions or concerns.
Alternatively, the Walk activity, corresponds to explicit workouts. In other words, when you click “Start Tracking” and select the walking workout. For example, when record your evening dog walk. On your device/app, these WILL show up in your workout feed.

In most cases this distinction will not matter, however, it is possible to participate in a challenge that does not count Walking (Passive). This will be clearly stated in the Challenge Overview. In such a case, it is important to remember to track your walks the same way you do all your other workouts. However, if you forget, you can always edit this on FitRankings from your activity feed.
As always, please reach out to support@fitrankings.com if you have any questions or concerns!
